DAY 2 MONDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2019: COLUMBUS DAY (SORRY, I CANT CALL IT ANYTHING ELSE BUT COLUMBUS DAY) . TRAVELING TO GETTYSBURG

We are headed to Artillery Ridge Campground and Horse Park in Gettysburg, PA. We are skeptical about the horse part. On our way home in May, we reserved at a Horse Ranch Camp Ground. It turned out to be a Pick and Pay car part junkyard. We can’t make this stuff up. Needless to say, the owners found this form of business more lucrative than a horseback riding resort but never changed the website. We didn’t stay the week, as planned , but moved on.

Today we toured the Gettysburg‘s Museum, watched a fabulous movie, and saw an amazing cyclorama of the terrible battles fought here. We learned so much. In 1863, General Lee decided the time was right for an invasion north of the Mason Dixon Line. He hoped the invasion of the North would transfer the scene of hostilities out of the Virginia farmlands. But most of all, Lee hoped his plan would end the Civil War. General Buford was leading the Union Army on July 1st. The North was forced to retreat and seek higher ground , an area known as Cemetery Hill. The second day, the casualties on both sides were tremendous. The third and final day started  early. The Union soldiers attempted to regain the areas lost the night before. By late morning they were successful . The confederate army was spent but Lee began his final attack, Pickets Charge. The Confederates failed to take over the Center of the Union line. When General Buford’s division was relieved by the Union‘s 1st Corps, an intense battle was fought but the Union was able to turn back the Confederates. There was so much to learn and absorb but we are so glad we came. Tomorrow we arranged a private car tour of the actual battle fields.
